Can my body reject an artificial lens?
No, that is not possible. This is due to two reasons:
Biocompatible material
This means that the material is specially designed not to trigger an immune response from the body. It feels like a natural part to the body.
Avascular environment: no blood supply at the site of the lens
The artificial lens is placed in the posterior chamber of the eye, an area without a direct blood supply. Because our immune system works via cells in the blood, these cannot reach the lens. As a result, the body cannot generate an immune response.
In short: the body does not see the artificial lens as foreign. Furthermore, the eye itself suppresses all reactions of the immune system, so that the artificial lens is not seen as a threat. As a result, there is no chance of rejection, as can happen with an organ transplant.
But what material is the artificial lens made of?
- The ReplaceLens: is made of a high-quality Acrylic material.
- The ExtraLens: is made of a high-quality Collagen polymer.
