Drs. Gergely Losonczy
Ophthalmologist

The cornea specialist
Gergely Losonczy studied medicine and ophthalmology in Hungary and simultaneously completed a PhD in Clinical Genetics. In 2015 he came to the Netherlands. “My main motivation to move was that I could not follow a fellowship in Hungary.”
In the Netherlands, Gergely started as an ophthalmologist at the Zuyderland Hospital in Sittard-Geleen. In 2021, he went to the RadboudUMC where he could become a corneal surgeon. Gergely: “Corneal surgery is a wonderful subspecialty. You then perform the complex cataract operations that other ophthalmologists in the region cannot, do not want to or dare to do.”
Turning a healthy eye into a perfect eye
In 2023, Gergely started working part-time at FYEO: “Cornea and refractive surgery are a great match and FYEO wanted to bring in a cornea specialist.” The differences between working in the hospital and working at FYEO are significant. Gergely: “At Radboud, I mainly help seriously ill patients. They are happy if they can still see something after treatment. That is a completely different story than people with healthy eyes who want to see perfectly without glasses. It is very nice work, custom work down to the micrometer. Clients have high expectations and I have to meet them.”
Extensive and clear
At FYEO, a strong team works with a lot of knowledge and experience. Gergely: “We follow the developments in the market. We are innovative, always have the best techniques and the latest lasers. Everyone who works here strives for perfection.” According to Gergely, you are a good ophthalmologist if you make an effort to get to know the client and build a relationship of trust: “I want to know what the client has in mind and what he wants to achieve with the treatment. I have to be clear and detailed during the intake. The client should not leave with all kinds of questions.”
“Reassuring the client during treatment is teamwork.”
Gergely: “Most people find it scary that something is happening to their eyes. That’s why I’m an ophthalmologist and a fellow human being during the operation. Reassuring someone is teamwork. In the operating room, we agree on who plays which role. If we see that a client is very nervous, someone will hold his hand for a moment or keep talking to him. During the treatment, I always inform the client about what I’m doing and how long it will take. We often hear that clients find that very pleasant.”
