Astigmatism

When you have a cylindrical deviation, the image is often not sharp, both near and far. This is because your cornea is not round, but oval-shaped like a rugby ball. The medical name is astigmatism.

What is astigmatism

The cornea or lens of your eye is not perfectly round at the front like a football. It is more shaped like a rugby ball.

The light refracts in different directions. Your eye lens cannot bundle all rays on the retina at the back of your eye. This creates two focal points, each with its own strength. The difference between these 2 strengths is called cylinder.

A astigmatism also occurs if you are farsighted or nearsighted. The deviation often occurs in your first years of life.

Symptoms of astigmatism

  • Blurred vision near and far;
  • Headache;
  • Tired eyes;
  • The feeling that your eye has to constantly zoom in to see clearly.
  • Cylinder correction

    Correcting astigmatism is possible with many treatments. Often this is in combination with correcting a minus or plus strength. Astigmatism can be corrected with both laser eye surgery and a lens implant.

    Every treatment starts with a preliminary examination and consultation with an ophthalmologist. This examination is essential to map out your eye situation exactly, so you will always receive a treatment advice completely tailored to your needs. The ophthalmologist you see during the consultation is also the ophthalmologist who will ultimately treat you, should you opt for treatment. The preliminary examination is always free and without obligation.
