Am I suitable for laser eye surgery?
There’s a good chance you are. We can perform laser eye surgery on approximately 80% of people. During a preliminary examination, we determine if you’re suitable for laser eye surgery and which treatment is best for you. This depends on your age, eye health, and lifestyle.

Requirements for laser eye surgery
Whether you’re eligible for laser eye surgery depends on various factors. A preliminary examination is always necessary to determine if you’re suitable. The following requirements are important in any case:
Do you not meet the basic requirements? arrow_downward
Then unfortunately, you are not suitable for eye laser surgery. Perhaps a lens implantation treatment might be suitable for you. With this treatment, we can also solve your (incipient) reading problems or eye abnormalities.
Why not eye laser surgery under 18 years of age? arrow_downward
For eye laser surgery, your eye length must be fully grown. This happens after puberty is completed and you are no longer growing in height. In case of doubt, we postpone the treatment and first perform a second preliminary examination to determine if the eye length is stable.
Why not eye laser surgery with a BMI higher than 35? arrow_downward
The reason we do not perform treatment for a BMI above 35 is that we follow the guidelines of the Health Care Inspectorate. It has been proven that with a BMI above 35, the risk of complications during a medical procedure increases. Therefore, we do not treat people with a BMI higher than 35.
Why not eye laser surgery if you are pregnant or breastfeeding? arrow_downward
During pregnancy and while breastfeeding, hormonal activity increases. This can affect your vision. For this reason, we only perform laser surgery 3 months after you have given birth or stopped breastfeeding.
Who is suitable for eye laser surgery? arrow_downward
To determine if you are suitable for eye laser surgery, we always need to do a preliminary examination first. Below we answer some frequently asked questions about eye laser surgery. This will give you a better insight into when you are or are not suitable for an eye laser treatment.
Is your cornea too thin or does its shape deviate? arrow_downward
If your cornea is too thin, you don’t have enough tissue to correct your refractive error. If your cornea has a steep or flat shape, our eye doctor may decide not to perform laser eye surgery. In both cases, an ExtraLens treatment can often be a solution.
Are your eyes extremely dry? arrow_downward
If your eyes are extremely dry, we often cannot perform an eye laser treatment. It may be that we can still perform a ReLEx SMILE treatment. If this is not possible, an ExtraLens treatment is often a solution.
Is your refractive error too large? arrow_downward
Is your refractive error outside the range of -12 to +4.5? Then too large an adjustment of the shape of your cornea is needed. It loses its firmness as a result. Eye laser surgery is then not safe and responsible. An ExtraLens treatment is a good alternative.
Do you have very large pupils? arrow_downward
The size of your pupils determines the area of your cornea through which you look. With very large pupils, the laser area can become too large, which is why we advise against eye laser surgery. In some cases, an ExtraLens treatment may still be an option.
Do you have cataracts? arrow_downward
Then an eye laser treatment is not possible. If you have advanced cataracts, a ReplaceLens treatment is a solution to improve your vision. In this procedure, we replace your natural, cloudy lens with a clear ReplaceLens. This immediately resolves your cataracts. Moreover, thanks to the artificial lens, you can no longer develop cataracts in the future.
Do you have a corneal condition (keratoconus)? arrow_downward
A keratoconus is a bulging of the cornea. This changes the distribution of force in your cornea. It is then not safe and responsible to adjust the shape of your cornea. Sometimes an ExtraLens treatment can be the solution for you.
