TransPRK
Every treatment begins with a preliminary examination. From this, personalized treatment advice is provided, as each eye is unique.
Have you not yet had a preliminary examination, but are curious about which treatment methods are suitable for you? Then easily schedule your preliminary examination.
Already had a preliminary examination and received advice for a TransPRK treatment? On this page, you can read more about what this treatment entails.
What is TransPRK
Your eyes are minimally touched in this treatment. Hence, TransPRK is also known as the no-touch method. The TransPRK treatment is 100% laser-guided, making the results stable and almost exactly predictable. This treatment is suitable when other methods such as IntraLasik or ReLEx SMILE are not possible.
TransPRK: 100% laser-guided
The TransPRK eye laser treatment is a surface treatment. This involves first removing the outer layer of the cornea, the epithelium, in order to then correct the strength with the laser. In the TransPRK treatment, this layer is loosened using a laser.
Exactly how long the treatment takes depends on your strength deviation. The higher your strength, the more time the laser takes. In total, it takes barely 1 minute per eye.

Frequently asked questions about TransPRK
Why am I not eligible for laser eye surgery if I have a higher prescription? arrow_downward
It is possible that you expected in advance to be eligible for laser eye surgery with your prescription. Perhaps you have even had a preliminary examination at another eye clinic which showed this. However, it may be that the advice after a preliminary examination at FYEO is to opt for an ExtraLens treatment.
We always want the best result for you. Not only now, but also for the future. With laser eye surgery, we change the shape of the cornea. When a higher strength laser is required, the shape of the cornea is also adjusted more. For now, this might be safe and responsible, but if the cornea needs to be adjusted significantly, it could be that you are not or less suitable for another treatment in the future, such as a lens replacement.
With an ExtraLens treatment we do not change anything in your cornea, so this is still possible.
What if I rub my eyes after laser eye surgery? arrow_downward
You may not rub your eyes for two weeks after laser eye surgery. For hygiene, healing, wrinkling and the bandage lens.
Lasek & TransPRK
With the Lasek and TransPRK treatment you get a bandage lens in your eyes. By accidentally rubbing your eyes you could move it. This lens is removed after 5 days.
IntraLasik Femtosecond & ReLEx SMILE
With the IntraLasik Femtosecond and ReLEx SMILE treatment, there is a small chance of wrinkling when you rub your eyes, especially in the first few days. If this unexpectedly happens to you, you can recognize it by burning, red eyes and blurred vision. Fortunately, it can be fixed.
What is customised? arrow_downward
In order to achieve optimal vision quality, we need to take into account the specific shape of your cornea. That is why we advise our eye laser treatments Lasek, TransPRK and IntraLasik to always have them customised (also known as wavefront).
If we were not to do this, it would be at the expense of your vision quality. You will notice this, for example, in (more) trouble with halos, color shifting, glare and starbursting. We want to prevent this of course and we always strive for the best quality for your eyes.

Can you go blind from laser eye surgery? arrow_downward
The chance of going blind after treatment is very small. At FYEO we have never had to deal with this.
As with any medical procedure, there are risks associated with treatment. A complication, often caused by not following medical advice and careless handling of the lifestyle and medication, could theoretically lead to blindness. The chance of this is very minimal if you follow all the lifestyle rules. Complications are also often easy to treat.
What are the disadvantages of TransPRK? arrow_downward
- Sensitive eyes the first few days after treatment
- Recovery takes longer
- 3 to 4 days for the top layer of the cornea to heal
- Complete wound healing takes 3 months with low starting level of vision
