Lasek
Every treatment begins with a preliminary examination. This results in a customized treatment recommendation from the doctor, because every eye is unique. If you have not yet had a preliminary examination, but are curious about which treatment method is suitable for you, simply schedule your preliminary examination .
Have you already had a preliminary examination and the advice for a Lasek treatment came from that? On this page you can read more about this treatment at FYEO, the benefits, steps and what you can expect during the recovery period.
What is Lasek and how does the treatment work?
Lasek is a safe and proven eye laser method and was one of the first treatments used for laser eye surgery. During a Lasek treatment, the outer layer of the cornea, the epithelium, is first (temporarily) removed by means of an alcohol. In order to then be able to correct the strength in the underlying layer with a laser. After the correction, the epithelium is replaced and a protective bandage lens is placed on your eye to support your recovery. This can often be removed again during the first check-up.
Because the outer layer of the cornea is loosened, we call Lasek a surface treatment. How long the correction with the laser takes exactly depends on how much of a prescription you have. The higher your prescription, the more time the laser needs to correct. But it never takes longer than 20 seconds per eye.
Lasek customized treatment
At Lasek we always advise to have the treatment customised (also called wavefront). This means that during the eye laser treatment we take into account the unique shape and irregularities of your cornea. This approach prevents new imperfections in the cornea and the quality of your vision remains optimal. Read more about customised here.
Lasek when other methods are not possible
Nowadays, Lasek has been overtaken by more modern techniques. However, this treatment is still very suitable when newer methods such as IntraLasik or ReLEx SMILe are not possible. For example, with a thin cornea or dry eyes. At FYEO we always look at which method suits your eyes and situation best. During a consultation with the doctor, you will look together at whether Lasek is the right choice for you.

What is customised? arrow_downward
In order to achieve optimal vision quality, we need to take into account the specific shape of your cornea. That is why we advise our eye laser treatments Lasek, TransPRK and IntraLasik to always have them customised (also known as wavefront).
If we were not to do this, it would be at the expense of your vision quality. You will notice this, for example, in (more) trouble with halos, color shifting, glare and starbursting. We want to prevent this of course and we always strive for the best quality for your eyes.

Why am I not eligible for laser eye surgery if I have a higher prescription? arrow_downward
It is possible that you expected in advance to be eligible for laser eye surgery with your prescription. Perhaps you have even had a preliminary examination at another eye clinic which showed this. However, it may be that the advice after a preliminary examination at FYEO is to opt for an ExtraLens treatment.
We always want the best result for you. Not only now, but also for the future. With laser eye surgery, we change the shape of the cornea. When a higher strength laser is required, the shape of the cornea is also adjusted more. For now, this might be safe and responsible, but if the cornea needs to be adjusted significantly, it could be that you are not or less suitable for another treatment in the future, such as a lens replacement.
With an ExtraLens treatment we do not change anything in your cornea, so this is still possible.
What if the treatment fails? arrow_downward
Nature cannot be captured in calculation models. If wound healing is somewhat faster, slower or different, this can have an effect on the final result. This can ensure that a small residual strength remains after treatment.
Lifetime Warranty – Additional Treatment
If this is experienced as a nuisance in daily life, you are eligible for additional treatment. The additional examinations, retreatment and necessary medication costs are included in your lifelong guarantee. With the exception of any medication costs if a repeat prescription appears to be necessary.
Does laser eye surgery provide permanent results? arrow_downward
This is a question that is often asked. The result is in principle permanent: the effect cannot be undone. With laser eye treatment, the shape of your cornea is adjusted. This process is irreversible.
Research shows that the cornea recovers well and stably after laser eye surgery. This does not mean that your eyes and your prescription cannot change over the years. As you get older, you may develop cataracts or need reading glasses.
Reading glasses due to aging
Many people wonder whether they need reading glasses after laser eye surgery. The fact that you need reading glasses as you get older has nothing to do with your cornea, but with your eye lens. As you get older, your eye lens can no longer focus for close-up. You then suffer from presbyopia . This is therefore separate from the laser eye surgery. A solution for this is a lens implant . In most cases, we therefore recommend this if you are at an age where it is likely that you will soon have reading problems.
Is a Lasek treatment painful? arrow_downward
This is a question we hear a lot. The treatment itself is not painful because your eyes are numbed with eye drops. Because the outer layer is temporarily removed, it has to recover. This causes a painful to sensitive recovery for the first few days. The degree of discomfort varies from person to person, but pain relief and good aftercare help to alleviate the symptoms. After a few days, the pain usually subsides, and after about a week, most of the medical recovery process is complete.
What are the disadvantages of Lasek? arrow_downward
- Longer recovery
- Sensitive during recovery
- Complete wound healing takes 3 months with low starting level of vision
