Nearsightedness (myopia)
Are you nearsighted? Then you can’t see far away clearly. The medical name for this is myopia. This eye condition can usually be treated.
What is myopia
With myopia, your eyeball is slightly longer and/or the cornea is slightly steeper than it should be. This means that the light does not fall on the retina, where you see clearly, but in front of it. A blurred image is created far away. The strength of this refractive error is indicated by a minus sign (-).
Cause
A small portion of the population is born with myopia. In addition, children can develop myopia during childhood and puberty. The cause is an increase in the length of the eye. Usually, the growth of the eye stops after puberty and with it worsens myopia.

Treatments for myopia
Many eye treatments are possible to correct myopia. Every treatment starts with a preliminary examination and consultation with an ophthalmologist. This examination is essential to map out your eye situation exactly, so you will always receive a treatment advice completely tailored to your needs. The ophthalmologist you see during the consultation is also the ophthalmologist who will ultimately treat you, should you opt for treatment. The preliminary examination is always free and without obligation.
