What are the disadvantages of eye laser surgery?
Eye laser surgery is now a fully-fledged third option alongside glasses or contact lenses. It has become so common that almost everyone knows someone who has had it done. And for good reason: it’s a proven, safe way to see clearly again – without aids.
But as with any medical treatment, it’s important to look not only at the advantages but also to consider the disadvantages. In this blog, we list the disadvantages for you so that you can make a realistic assessment of eye laser surgery.
1. The Cost of Eye Laser Treatment
The cost of laser eye surgery varies depending on the treatment method. At FYEO, the cheapest laser eye treatment starts from €1150 per eye, and the most expensive option starts from €2050 per eye. This can be a significant financial hurdle to consider.

2. The Treatment is a Surgery
Although the treatment itself is not experienced as painful, it is still a surgery that takes place in an operating room. We notice that clients sometimes underestimate this. A surgery always involves certain risks “and recovery time, so it's important that you inform yourself well before undergoing eye laser treatment. Read more about the risks” of eye laser surgery here.
3. Eye Laser Surgery Does not Provide Lifelong Sharp Vision
With eye laser surgery, the shape of your cornea is adjusted so that you can see clearly again. This correction is permanent, but the cornea is not the only part of your eye that affects your vision. As you get older, your eye lens also ages. This lens is responsible for focusing, which you can compare to a camera lens. When this function starts to decline - on average around the age of 45 - you notice this by difficulty with close-up vision, such as reading. We call this presbyopia. At FYEO, we can solve this with a ReplaceLens treatment, which often allows you to live without glasses for the rest of your life. So even if your cornea is corrected and you can see clearly again, you can't escape the aging of your eye lens. As a result, you cannot see sharply at all distances for life after eye laser surgery.
Finally
An eye laser treatment offers many advantages, but it's important to also have realistic expectations about the treatment. Additionally, every eye is unique and it's important to have a thorough examination to determine which treatment method best suits your personal situation.
