Possible risks, complications or side effects
No surgery is without risk. Lens implantation is no exception. Although the chance is very small, complications can occur during or after the lens implantation treatment. Fortunately, these can often be treated well. By carefully following the aftercare process, you significantly reduce the chance of complications.
Regular check-ups
Check-ups after your treatment are very important. This allows us to monitor the health and vision of your eyes, as well as detect any complications in good time. There are fixed check-ups in the first year after your lens implant treatment. It is important not to miss these.
Possible complications of lens implantation
Wound leakage
If the wound through which the lens is inserted leaks, extra care may be required. Sometimes tablets and/or eye drops are prescribed temporarily. It may be necessary to place a small stitch. This does not cause any further problems.
Infection
There is an extremely small chance of infection. After the treatment, you will be given antibiotics and anti-inflammatories to limit this risk. An infection can occur a few days after the operation. The eye will then become red, usually painful and the visual acuity will decrease very significantly. In that case, it is of the utmost importance to contact your ophthalmologist immediately or the emergency number that is available 24/7. The sooner treatment is started, the less damage the infection can cause.
With ExtraLenzen: increased eye pressure
There may be temporary increased eye pressure. This usually recovers by itself or with additional medication.
With ExtraLenzen: accelerated cataracts
If the ExtraLens is placed too close to the natural lens, there is a greater chance of developing accelerated cataracts. To reduce this chance, the preliminary examination will measure whether there is sufficient space at the front of the eye. During the follow-up checks, the distance between the ExtraLens and your natural lens will be measured precisely.
With ReplaceLenses: stimulation of the retina
Temporary irritation of the retina, macular edema, can occur, causing you to see less sharply. This usually recovers on its own or with the help of additional medication.
With ReplaceLenzen: retinal detachment
In some cases there may be a slightly higher chance of retinal detachment. If your risk of retinal detachment is higher, this will be shown in a calculation model during the consultation with the ophthalmologist.
With ReplaceLenzen: tear lens pouch
There is a very small chance of a tear in the lens bag, whereby part of the vitreous can come forward. This can usually be corrected immediately. If it cannot be corrected immediately during the treatment, you will be referred to the hospital. The correction will take place at a later time.
Possible side effects of lens implantation
Residual strength
No matter how precisely we measure your eye during the preliminary examination, it is possible that your vision will not be optimal after the treatment because there appears to be a small residual strength. If this is very disruptive in daily life, examinations will be carried out to see whether additional treatment is useful. This additional treatment is free of charge and falls under the lifetime guarantee.
With ReplaceLenzen: spots or cloudiness
Your eye is filled with a jelly, the vitreous, which contains opacities. These opacities cause shadows on the retina, making it seem as if you are seeing small black flies or lines. Over the years, the natural lens of the eye becomes less transparent, making these opacities less visible. After a ReplaceLens implant, your lens is clear again and you can see these opacities better. The opacities are therefore not caused by the treatment. If you are seriously bothered by this, it can be remedied with treatment from the insured care. You may have to pay a deductible for this.
With ReplaceLenses: seeing colors bluish
In the first few months, your vision may feel a bit bluer or cooler in color. After years of walking around with a dull lens, you suddenly have a clear lens. This is quite an adjustment for your brain.
With ReplaceLenzen: Radiance and Halos
After the treatment you may see circles of light around artificial light sources. Also called halos. This phenomenon does not disappear, but your brain gets used to it. Eventually you no longer consciously see the circles. Like the tip of your nose, which is always in your field of vision. Your brain has learned to ignore the tip.
With ReplaceLenzen: posterior capsule opacification (OCP)
The new ReplaceLens is placed in your natural lens pouch. Over time, some residue may form on this pouch.
You will notice this by a slight haze over the image, as if you are looking through a plastic bag. If your vision is getting worse, make an appointment. The ophthalmologist can remove OCP with a short treatment, not even in the operating room.
