Some people work to work. Others work to enjoy. Dr. Frank Kerkhoff enjoys his work. “Sometimes I have to be kept away from my work. I am a bit of a professional idiot. It is a way of life, just like an artist who is busy with his passion day and night.” “I am also a very emotional person. I trust my gut feeling very much, which is a combination of reason, knowledge, past and all sorts of other things. If you are passionate about your work, it is easier to keep going. Then work is no longer work.”

Years of experience

Dr. Kerkhoff has been an ophthalmologist for over 25 years. He has gained a lot of experience in complex operations. “In Eindhoven I started the national center for premature treatments. Premature babies with retinal problems are treated here. In 2005 I went to America to learn this treatment. I have now trained two young retinal surgeons. This is very special and valuable work.” It also characterizes Dr. Kerkhoff how versatile he has developed. Words that best describe his career are ‘never satisfied’ and ‘it can always be better’. “I am always looking for better or more favorable for a client. I am innovative and always open to new ideas. I also enjoy communicating with clients and analyzing the person in front of me in order to be able to make choices that suit him or her.”
This once again shows how driven Dr. Kerkhoff is and how important he finds it to give each client the most appropriate advice, with quality always coming first.

Medical Director FYEO

In 2011, Dr. Kerkhoff started FYEO together with founder Paul Holtman. He has been the medical director since 2012. “Refractory surgery used to be a less crystallized specialty in the Netherlands. There were some doctors who did it ‘on the side’. At FYEO, we have initiated the perfection and professionalization of refractive surgery, just like abroad. My vision as medical director is that refractive surgery is a fully-fledged subspecialty within eye care. We want to convey our vision and way of working in the Netherlands and the rest of the world.

According to Dr. Kerkhoff, it is quite a challenge to fish out the good people. “Not every doctor can be taught the profession according to our requirements. FYEO is really the top of the top.”

Unique working method

FYEO’s unique approach is particularly evident in its customized treatments. “The best advice is the advice that fits the client’s life. This means that the choice for each client will be slightly different. Many people do not realize that in many clinics they are given a kind of one-size-fits-all advice. Our vision is that doctors do the consultations themselves and in this way we ensure that each client receives customized advice that best fits the client’s life. In this, we at FYEO are very unique in the Netherlands and even in the world. I am very proud to be at the helm here.” “What we do not do well enough yet is publish our results. I am busy setting up a research center within FYEO to be able to show much more clearly what our research results are, which will allow us to generate even more attention from the professional world.” As medical director, Dr. Kerkhoff has high ambitions and expectations. “FYEO must become like McDonalds, the same quality everywhere. Wherever you are. It would be great if FYEO could bring about the same quality and experience.”
