Always all the way

When Mustapha El Kandoussi did an internship in ophthalmology during his medical training, he decided he wanted to become an ophthalmologist. Mustapha: “What immediately appealed to me was the combination of the result-oriented work with the short, intense contacts during consultations and the technical aspect of the profession. You use a lot of technical feats with which you can improve a lot in something as small as an eye.”

Making the difference

After his training in Utrecht, Mustapha went to the RadboudUMC in Nijmegen for his specialization. Mustapha: “Intervention really means giving someone their sight back. For example, if you do nothing about a detached retina, someone will go blind. It feels great to be able to make that difference. In addition, you have to work very precisely at the micrometer. I find what I do in Nijmegen incredibly fun and challenging, but I wanted more variety and especially wanted to expand my surgical skills. I heard good stories about FYEO, went to take a look and immediately stayed.” At FYEO, Mustapha performs all treatments after an intensive training program with very experienced fellow ophthalmologists. “With me, it is always all the way or nothing.”

Looking at the person as a whole

As an ophthalmologist, you should not only be qualitatively good. According to Mustapha, a good doctor is also someone who looks at the person as a whole. Mustapha: “You should not automatically choose the treatment that you feel most comfortable with as a doctor. At FYEO, we really focus our advice on the client: we do our work for him or her.
