Will my laser eye treatment be reimbursed?
It is possible that your laser eye treatment will be partially reimbursed. You will receive this reimbursement from your basic insurance or supplementary insurance. Read the policy conditions of your insurance. Are you eligible for reimbursement? Let us know. After your treatment, you will then receive a special healthcare invoice. You must submit this to your health insurer.
We meet the conditions
Reimbursement from basic insurance
Do you have a medical indication? Then your eye laser treatment will be partially reimbursed from your basic insurance. The ophthalmologist treating you determines the medical indication. He or she does this based on the measurement data from the preliminary examination. A medical indication is when you have a special strength in combination with contact lens intolerance. Or when a PTK laser treatment is needed to repair your cornea.
Your health insurer determines how high the reimbursement is. This differs per health insurer and depends on the type of basic insurance (in-kind or reimbursement). Keep in mind that in this case you pay your own risk.
Reimbursement from supplementary insurance
Whether you will receive compensation from your supplementary insurance depends on your insurance package. Read the policy conditions for this. These also state how high the possible compensation is. If you are entitled to compensation, this is always a one-off amount for the complete treatment of two eyes. You do not have to pay your own risk for this compensation.

How does laser eye surgery work? arrow_downward
With laser eye surgery, a laser corrects your refractive error. The higher your prescription, the more the shape of your cornea needs to be adjusted. With laser eye surgery, nearsightedness , farsightedness and a cylinder deviation can be corrected.
Laser eye surgery always takes place in two steps, regardless of the technique chosen:
- Reaching the correct layer in the cornea.
- Removal of tissue to correct strength.
The laser evaporates tiny layers of tissue or loosens a layer, which makes the cornea flatter or more curved. This gives your cornea the right shape and the light falls perfectly on your retina again, resulting in sharp vision. Every eye laser treatment focuses exclusively on the front of the cornea. The lower 2/3 of the cornea remains completely intact and is not touched by the laser.
When is eye surgery not possible? arrow_downward
In certain cases we definitely cannot perform surgery. We call these absolute contraindications. In about 1 in 20 clients it is medically irresponsible to treat.
Examples of absolute contraindications
- BMI over 35 – calculate your BMI here
- Age under 18 years
- Advanced glaucoma – increased eye pressure
- Pregnancy
Specifically for laser eye surgery
- Keratoconus – abnormal shape of the cornea
- Cataracts – a ReplaceLens implant may be an ideal solution
Relative contraindications
Sometimes there is more treatment space. Relative contraindications are conditions where we look at the possibilities per person. Examples are:
- Diabetes
- Insufficient corneal quality
- Inadequate eye health
Consensus Refractive Surgery
All contraindications are described in the Refractive Surgery Consensus. This was drawn up as a consensus among Dutch ophthalmologists by the members of the Dutch Society for Refractive Surgery – NGRC. In addition to the opinion of these ophthalmologists, international standards and opinions were also considered. It forms an important guideline for performing high-quality, safe refractive surgery.
